Lesley Gore-"Brink of Disaster"

Released in 1967, here's what I can only refer to as a "paranoia-pop" song!

Porter Wagoner-"Roses Out Of Season"

This haunting song, written by frequent collaborator Dolly Parton, appears on Wagoner's 1971 album, The Silent Kind.

The Kinks-"Some Mother's Son"

Enjoy this wistful war song from the Kinks' 1969 concept album, Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire).

Helene Smith-"Thrills and Chills"

Originally released as a b-side to "I Am Controlled by Your Love" in 1965, "Thrills and Chills" was also included on the 1967 LP "Helene Smith Sings Sweet Soul," on Miami's Deep City label, and recently, on Volume 7 of Numero's fantastic "Eccentric Soul" series. This song is a lot of fun!

Lee Hazlewood-"Cold Hard Times"

Here's a great one from Lee Hazlewood's 1970 album, Cowboy in Sweden. Hazlewood, perhaps best known for writing "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'," became a full-fledged superstar in Sweden, where this album went gold. A corresponding TV special of the same name was made in Sweden--
See the segment for this song here.

Hazlewood also performed "Cold Hard Times," as well as "Pray Them Bars Away" on TV personality, musician, and Stylophone spokesperson Rolf Harris' BBC variety show--

The Beach Boys-"Love is a Woman"

The final track on their 1977 album, Love You, which marked Brian Wilson's return to songwriting after a long hiatus from the group. To this day, opinion regarding this album remains strongly divided.

Brian Wilson made an unusual Saturday Night Live appearance on November 27, 1976, debuting this song before its release (I like this version most!) Watch the performance here.

Marianne Faithfull-"In My Time of Sorrow"

Here's a great "rainy day" song from a young Marianne Faithfull.

Written by Jackie De Shannon and Jimmy Page, it appears on her 1965 self-titled album.
